Frequently asked questions

What type of ceiling is best?

We recommend using this tool to find the best ceiling for your space. Depending on its conditions and what you are using it for, you might need acoustical mineral fiber tiles that also have sag and mold/mildew resistance. You might need to seal your ceiling for Clean Room spaces or labs. Or you might be looking for something decorative for your home where a wood-look ceiling is just right. Answer a few questions in this tool to find out your best match!

How much does ceiling tile cost?

Armstrong acoustic ceiling tiles start at $0.97/sq. ft. The cost depends on the material, style of ceiling tile, and the performance capabilities you want.

What is the cheapest way to cover a ceiling?

If budget is a concern, we recommend installing a drop ceiling or a 12” x 12” direct attach tile. While the material can be more than drywall, the labor needed for the install is much less. BONUS: you get to take advantage of all of the performance features of acoustical tiles that drywall does not have.

What are the different types of ceiling tiles?

Ceiling tiles come in a variety of sizes, materials, and looks. Performance tiles are made of mineral fiber and fiberglass and are usually installed in a drop ceiling, though options are available for surface mount applications. You can also find wood and wood-look ceilings, metal ceilings, PVC tiles, and even highly sustainable wood fiber ceilings in lots of different colors and patterns.

What are the most common sizes of ceiling tiles?

Ceiling tiles come in many different sizes. Our most popular sizes are 24" x 24" and 24" x 48" ceiling tiles followed by 30" x 30" & 12" x 12" panels.

What is the most popular ceiling finish?

The most popular ceiling finish is a white, lightly textured finish that works great for acoustics and keeps the look more modern than traditional textured and fissured tiles.

What is the most popular ceiling texture?

A light textured finish is most popular, though heavier textures and fissures are also found in many spaces. It really depends on the look you want and what fits within your budget.

Can I install an Armstrong ceiling as a Do-It-Yourself project?

Yes, drop ceiling installation is a task for experienced do-it-yourselfers. Note that direct-apply options are a little easier. Watch Can I Install Ceiling Tile Myself? Are You A DIYer? to see how your skills hold up against your desired project.

What is the easiest ceiling to install?

The easiest ceilings to install are surface mount ceilings. Some examples of those are 12” x 12” surface mount ceiling tiles that pair with our EASY UP track and clips, or our WOODHAVEN Planks over a drop ceiling. The easiest ceiling projects require you to be familiar with simple tools like a hammer, tape measure, and saw. If you are an experienced DIY’er or contractor, drop ceilings can be completed in as little as a weekend and you’ll get the added benefits of acoustics and other performance features some surface mount options can’t provide.
