Additional costs to consider

To fully prepare financially for your ceiling investment, you’ll want to figure out if any of the below applies to your project and add them to your budget.

Waste removal & permits
DIY’ing your basement? You’re probably good - however, when disposing of older materials it’s always best to check with your city or town rules. Waste removal could be free or you might have to rent a large container.
If you have a larger space, are doing demolition, or reducing ceiling clearance, you’ll want to investigate getting a permit. Fines are more than the permit in most cases, so check into your local laws.

Lighting & wiring
If your new ceiling requires moving or installing lights or updating any wiring, you’ll need to include an estimate for hourly rates by a licensed electrician into your budget.

Moving vents
Your current HVAC system may feature heating and cooling vents that tuck behind your drop ceiling tiles. If you’re covering those or need to move them, you’ll want to consult an HVAC tech. They typically charge an hourly rate so add that to your budget.

Other preparations
Before your new ceiling is installed, you’ll want to make sure you’ve fixed any leaks or structural damage. Whether you do it yourself or hire out, the cost will depend on the issue, the materials needed, and ceiling project scope.

Hiring a contractor
If your ceiling project is above your skill level, get a few quotes from local contractors and don't forget about our online resources to help.
